Sometime in the early 1950's (I was 5 in 1952), I began going to Finney's Cafeteria with my grandmother. Finneys is right next door to the former HQ of Security Pacific National Bank. When "downtown", we would eat at Finney's, Cole's, Clifton's, The Statler Hilton or The Biltmore. As a kid, I remembered that Finney's had cruets with oil and vinegar on the tables. Sometimes I was there with my grandmother and great-grandmother (both Los Angeles natives) who remembered the Chocolate Shop. The interior was so beautiful. I have driven past the lovation many times; I did not recognize it from the street. I do not know if I am brave enough to walk in to the current condition. The Los Angeles of my youth (the elegant Los Angeles where the movie houses, hotels and restaurants were showplaces) is a rat-hole now. Oh, I almost forgot about the magnificent department stores with the Christmas Windows. I work in the US Bank Building now across from the library. None of the new, fancy, restaurants (or hotels or buildings) compare with the beautiful Los Angeles of my youth. As a tenth (yes 10th) generation Los Angeles Native, it is so depressing. Maybe we should get together and save the old Chocolate Shop. Thanks for this blog.
